Sol y Luna Luxury Lodge, Sacred Valley, Peru

Sol y Luna is Maria’s favourite Sacred Valley hotel, Peru, for pampering and and luxury.

She writes…

“Sol & Luna is a charming place on the shores of the Urubamba river, in the heart of the Sacred Valley and on the way to Machu Picchu.

The Sacred Valley, at 2,800m high, is a land with immense open lands surrounded by mountains, a fertile area that bring fresh, summery food and drinks as you explore during the day.

As the chilly night time mountain air draws in, huddle around a private fireplace at the Sol & Luna in a ‘casita’ – premium, deluxe and superior standard to choose from.

The picturesque casitas combine avant-garde architecture and wide, open rooms laden with colourful Peruvian art.  The accommodation is luxurious with a personalised service and full of character, while outside sits the inexhaustible beauty of the Andean scenery, spacious gardens with flowers in full bloom, butterflies darting around and humming birds visiting.

The Wayra and Killa Wasi restaurants offers a light menu of tasty local cuisine, and you can also take advantage of the free yoga every morning and arrange your spa treatments, too.

Lunch or longer

I think Sol y Luna is the best place to enjoy the serenity of the Sacred Valley of the Incas while acclimatising, passing as I did on my way towards Machu Picchu.

It is also an ideal stay after a trek. There are all the amenities needed– an excellent spa and food – a two-night stay would be a perfect luxury relax after a challenging hike.

Wayra Restaurant is a great dining experience – a very quiet atmosphere and the food is superb. The waiters will make you fall in love with the dishes of their country. If you prefer something more familiar – the chefs can oblige.

We ate at a long wooden table in the garden with excellent mountain views. Before starting to eat, we were treated to a walking horses show. We had a welcome Pisco Sour cocktail to start, then a short ride round the gardens.

Food and horses

There is riding school for horse riding lovers, and an extensive, lawn area between roads full of flowering trees and vines.

The food is magnificent, it is difficult to decide what to have. You will want to try everything they offer, with appetizing desserts, too!

The wine list is very good, featuring mainly Chilean Argentine and European wines. Among the list is a Peruvian white, Tacama Target, very dry – outstanding.

“We only wish we could have stayed longer.”
